How to arrive
The most convenient entry point is Udon Thani International Airport (UTH), served by Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Thai Vietjet, and Thai Airways. Flights from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport (DMK) take about 1 hour 10 minutes, with fares starting around $30–35 one-way. There are also direct flights from Chiang Mai, Loei, and Phuket. From the airport, a shared minibus (limousine service) costs 80 THB per person and drops passengers at their accommodation; Grab taxis run around 150 THB to the city centre. By land from Bangkok, overnight trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal roughly every two hours, with fares from about $5–40 and a journey time of around 9.5 hours. VIP buses (e.g. Nakhonchai Air) depart every three hours from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal and arrive in approximately 7h 50m for $20–27. The city is also a springboard for Laos — a short ride north to Nong Khai (45-min train for 11 THB) connects to Vientiane via the Friendship Bridge.

Moving through the city
Getting around the city is easy and cheap. Grab ride-hailing (as of 2024) costs roughly 150 THB for a car or 60 THB for a motorbike taxi to the city centre. Traditional red songthaew shared trucks cover fixed routes for a few baht and are the preferred choice of locals. Tuk-tuks and metered taxis are also available, though taxis are not permitted to queue at the airport. For day trips to attractions like Red Lotus Lake, Ban Chiang, or Wat Pa Phu Kon, renting a motorbike or car is strongly recommended, as public transport to outlying sites is limited.
