Getting in
How to arrive
Ko Pha Ngan has no airport of its own — the nearest is Samui International Airport (USM) on neighbouring Ko Samui. From USM, take a taxi to Bang Rak or Nathon pier and board a ferry to Thong Sala Pier; the crossing takes 30–45 minutes and costs roughly $5–7 USD. Ferries from Koh Samui run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, with departures at 8:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 4:30 PM from Bang Rak Pier. A budget alternative is to fly to Surat Thani Airport (URT) on the mainland — tickets are significantly cheaper, but you'll add roughly 2–2.5 hours with a shuttle to Donsak Pier and a longer ferry crossing. From Bangkok overland, government 999-seal buses depart Sai Tai Mai (Southern) Terminal at 19:30 for 720 THB (first class) or 1,000 THB (VIP), arriving in about 14 hours inclusive of the ferry. Lomprayah also sells all-in bus-and-ferry combos from Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Ko Phi Phi, and other major hubs. All ferries arrive at Thong Sala Pier, the island's main port.
Getting around
Moving through the city
Renting a scooter is the default way to explore Ko Pha Ngan — it takes only about 30 minutes to drive across the island, and a scooter unlocks otherwise inaccessible beaches and viewpoints. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) ply the main coastal roads and are the most affordable shared option. Motorbike taxis are widely available for short hops. Note that some northern beaches and remote bays are only reachable by boat, and boat trips can be arranged through resorts and tour operators. Scooter riding requires care: several mountain grades are steep, roads can be uneven, and local traffic behaviour is unpredictable. Walking works well within Haad Rin and Thong Sala town centres, and bicycles are also available for rent.

Ko Pha Ngan enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from December through May and is the most popular window to visit. December to February offers the finest combination of sunshine, low humidity, and reliable seas — peak season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds around the Full Moon Party. March through May transitions toward the shoulder season: weather remains largely pleasant, prices soften, and the beaches are noticeably quieter — a favourite window for budget travellers and slow nomads. The wet season stretches from roughly September to December, with October and November seeing the heaviest rainfall and occasional ferry disruptions. That said, rain is often periodic rather than all-day, and the island remains very liveable even in the wetter months — accommodation prices drop considerably. April is the hottest month of the year.

Day 1: Thong Sala & the South
Morning

Ride north to the twin bays of Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai — among the most beautiful beaches on the island, with calm clear water and white sand. Swim and snorkel before the day-trippers arrive.
Afternoon
Cut inland to Than Sadet National Park. Hike to the Than Sadet Waterfall, which flows into a river said to have been visited by Thai royalty, then cool off in the natural pools.
Evening
Stop at Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) on your way back — accessible by longtail boat from Thong Nai Pan — for a sundowner and a seafood dinner at one of the simple beachside restaurants.
