How to arrive
Most visitors arrive via Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH), located 27 km east of downtown and ranked the 7th busiest airport in China in 2025, handling over 50 million passengers. It has direct flights to major domestic hubs and international destinations including Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, and Bangkok. From the airport, Metro Line 19 is the fastest and cheapest option, running directly to the city center in about 35–45 minutes for under ¥10 (~$1.40). Airport shuttle buses (e.g., the Wulinmen Line) cost around ¥20 (~$2.80) and take approximately 55 minutes to reach central Hangzhou. A taxi or DiDi to the city center takes 40–60 minutes under normal traffic and costs approximately ¥110–130 (~$15–18). By high-speed rail, Hangzhou is just 45 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao, with trains arriving at Hangzhou East Railway Station, which has direct metro connections into the city center.

Moving through the city
Hangzhou's metro is the backbone of city transport. As of 2026, the network spans 12 lines, 516 km of track, and 262 stations, covering all ten city districts. Metro fares run ¥2–9 per trip (~$0.28–1.25); the Hangzhou Citizen Card (Hangzhou Tong) offers a 9% discount and works on buses too. Buses cost ¥1–4, with a 50% discount when using a transit smart card. Tourist bus lines Y2, Y6, Y8, Y9, and Y10 link the major sights. Ride-hailing is popular via DiDi and Caocao (green EV fleet); DiDi has an English-language interface. Hangzhou is one of China's pioneers in bike-sharing — Meituan and Hello Bikes are available for ¥1–2 per 30 minutes, with excellent lakeside cycling paths around West Lake. Google Maps does not work in China; use Amap (AutoNavi) or Baidu Maps instead. Mobile payments (Alipay or WeChat Pay) dominate — international visitors can bind a Visa or Mastercard to Alipay for seamless access.

Hangzhou is at its most magical in spring (March to May), when plum and peach blossoms ring West Lake and the first Longjing tea harvest begins in the hillside plantations. Autumn (September to November) is equally beloved: the air turns crisp, osmanthus perfumes the city's parks and lakeside paths, and the hills take on a warm golden light. Both seasons offer the clearest views of West Lake and the most comfortable temperatures for walking. Summer is hot, humid, and popular with domestic tourists — expect crowds at major sights. Winter brings misty, atmospheric mornings that photographers love, but also more rain and the coldest temperatures. Arriving at Lingyin Temple early (before 8 am) is recommended year-round to beat the crowds.

Evening
Take the metro to Qinghefang (Hefang Street) Old Quarter — Hangzhou's historic commercial street dating to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Browse traditional medicine shops, snack stalls, and souvenir vendors. Try pian'erchuan noodles or sesame cakes from street vendors.

Day 3 — Grand Canal, Liangzhu & Tech Hangzhou

Explore the Gongshu (Grand Canal) district by water bus — one of four scenic canal lines connecting historic streets and neighborhoods. Visit the Grand Canal Museum for context on Hangzhou's 1,400-year canal heritage.
Afternoon
Day-trip north to the Liangzhu Culture Center (designed by Tadao Ando) and the adjacent David Chipperfield-designed Liangzhu Museum, where Neolithic archaeological finds from China's earliest known civilization are on display. Culture-seekers could also visit the Zhejiang Provincial Museum for classical Chinese art.
Evening
