How to arrive
Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) is the island's main gateway, located about 15–25 km from the city centre. Tourists from 59 countries can enter Hainan visa-free for 30 days. From the airport, a taxi or Didi to downtown costs around ¥60–100 (~$8–14 USD) and takes 35–40 minutes in normal traffic. A dedicated airport shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes from 05:30 until the last flight and costs ¥20/person. City buses No. 21 and No. 41 connect the airport to downtown for just ¥5/person. For onward island travel, the Meilan Airport Railway Station is accessible via an underground transit channel from the arrivals hall — high-speed rail to Sanya takes about 70 minutes, with tickets priced at ¥84 (2nd class) to ¥100 (1st class). Haikou is also accessible by ferry from Zhanjiang and other mainland ports via Haikou New Port and Xiuying Port.

Moving through the city
Haikou has no metro system, but an extensive city bus network of 55+ lines covers most attractions; fares are ¥1–5 per ride, payable by cash, Haikou Transport Card, WeChat Pay, or Alipay. Two dedicated tourist bus lines connect major sights for ¥10/day. Taxis are plentiful with a flag-fall of ¥10–12, then ¥2–3/km — always insist the meter is running. Didi (China's ride-hailing app, available in English) is generally cheaper than street taxis and is the recommended option for visitors. Dockless bike-share (Meituan Bike, Hello Bike) is widely available, with dedicated lanes along Haikou Bay promenade.
