01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Lelystad.

A bold city risen from the sea — where Dutch engineering, wildlife, and maritime heritage collide.

Lelystad is the capital of Flevoland province and one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands, founded in 1967 on land reclaimed from the former Zuiderzee. Built entirely on a polder, it trades historic canal streetscapes for modernist architecture, sweeping nature reserves, and standout maritime attractions. It is one of the most affordable cities in the Netherlands and serves as an easy day trip or base for exploring the wider Amsterdam metro area, just 35–40 minutes by train.
