NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) operates frequent direct and one-change services from Amsterdam Centraal to Deventer, with the fastest direct trains taking about 1 hour 11–13 minutes and tickets starting from roughly €11–22. From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the journey takes around 1 hour 17–19 minutes on the fastest NS services, with dozens of daily departures. Deutsche Bahn Intercity trains also serve the route a few times a day, reflecting Deventer's position on the line toward Germany.

Deventer's compact historic core is best explored on foot, with most major sights within a 15-minute walk of each other. The Netherlands' nationwide OV-chipkaart (and increasingly contactless bank-card payment via OVpay) covers local buses and trains, and Deventer railway station has free underground cycle parking plus bike hire, including OV-fiets rental bikes available from the station for about €4.65 per 24 hours.
