Lake Como has no airport of its own, but three Milan-area airports provide easy access. Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the most convenient for the western shore and Como city: take the Malpensa Express train to Saronno (~20 min, €8), then connect to Como Nord Lago (~30 min, €2.90) for a total journey of about 1 hour 20 minutes. From Milano Centrale, direct trains reach Como San Giovanni in ~40 minutes or Varenna-Esino in about 1 hour (€6.80 one-way), running roughly every hour. From Milan Linate (LIN), take the Airport Bus Express to Milano Centrale (~25 min), then connect by train. From Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY), shuttle buses link the airport to Bergamo station, from where you can reach Lecco by train in just over an hour. By car from Milan, follow the A9 motorway to Como (~52 km, 1 hour); note that lakeside roads are narrow and parking is very limited in popular villages. It is also possible to arrive by train from Lugano, Switzerland, via Como San Giovanni.

Getting around Lake Como is best done by combining ferries, buses, and trains rather than relying on a car — roads are narrow, parking is scarce, and summer traffic can be severe. The public ferry network is operated by Navigazione Laghi and runs year-round (with reduced winter schedules). In the central lake area, the Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio car ferry runs from roughly 7:30 am to 8 pm, every 20–40 minutes; a one-way passenger ticket between central towns (e.g. Bellagio to Varenna) costs €5.50, while a central-area day pass is €17.50. Faster hydrofoils connect Como to Varenna and Bellagio (Como–Bellagio express: €17.00 one-way; ~45 min). As of June 2025, you can pay for regular ferry services by tapping a contactless bank card or digital wallet via the NaviTap system on board. On the western shore, ASF Autolinee buses (C10 and C30 lines) connect Como city with Menaggio, Bellagio, and towns in between; a Cernobbio bus from Como costs about €1.70. Trains serve the eastern shore from Lecco to Colico, and Como city has two stations (Como San Giovanni and Como Nord Lago). Avoid driving during peak summer months; instead, travel early (before 10 am) or after 4 pm to beat ferry queues. Note that Uber only operates as Uber Black in the area, making it expensive and infrequent.

September is widely regarded as the single best month to visit Lake Como: summer heat has eased, crowds thin noticeably, all services remain fully open, and the light over the water is especially golden. May runs a close second — villa gardens are at their absolute peak, temperatures hover around 18–22°C, and the lake hasn't yet hit peak-season density. Together, late April through June and September through early October represent the sweet spot for most travelers, offering mild weather, blooming landscapes, reliable ferry schedules, and far better restaurant availability than the frantic July–August rush. Summer (July–August) is hot (averaging 25–30°C), buzzing, and beautiful — but Bellagio and Varenna can receive over 10,000 visitors a day, ferries sell out, and dinner reservations must be booked weeks ahead. Autumn (October) brings spectacular foliage, truffle festivals, and crystal-clear Alpine views, though rain becomes more common. Winter is serene and dramatically beautiful — snow-capped Alps reflect in still water, Christmas markets fill Como's Piazza Cavour — but expect many hotels, restaurants, and ferry lines to operate on reduced schedules or close entirely between November and February.
