Tilburg: a gritty-cool Brabant city where textile heritage, world-class contemporary art, and the Benelux's biggest funfair collide.

Once the wool capital of the Netherlands, Tilburg has reinvented itself as one of the country's most creative mid-sized cities. Its industrial past lives on in converted factory museums, the buzzing Spoorzone railway district, and a thriving craft-beer and arts scene. Home to three universities, the city pulses with youthful energy, and its vibrant Piushaven waterfront, stellar museum line-up, and easy day-trip reach of Efteling make it far more than a stopover.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
The closest airport to Tilburg is Eindhoven Airport (EIN), just 31 km away. From Eindhoven Airport, take a bus to Eindhoven Centraal station, then a direct train to Tilburg — the total journey takes roughly 1 hour. FlixBus also runs direct services from Eindhoven Airport to Tilburg Station (~35 min, tickets from around $6–$9). From Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), you can reach Tilburg by train via Breda in around 1 h 15 min. Brussels Airport (BRU) is approximately 1.5 hours by car or rail. Tilburg Centraal station sits on the edge of the city centre, making rail arrival extremely convenient.
Tilburg has three train stations and roughly 10 city bus lines, making inner-city travel straightforward. The bus operator is Arriva; all routes require check-in/check-out with an OV-chipkaart (or the newer OV-pas). Tourists can pick up an anonymous OV-chipkaart at Tilburg Centraal station. Note: the OV-chipkaart is being phased out in favour of the OV-pas by end of 2027 — contactless bank cards and OVpay are increasingly accepted. Cycling is the most popular way to get around: Tilburg has an extensive network of bike lanes, and OV-fiets rental bikes are available at the central station for card holders. E-scooters are also available for shorter hops between neighbourhoods.
The best window for visiting Tilburg runs from late spring through early autumn (May to September), when the weather is mild and outdoor life spills onto the terraces of Piushaven and Spoorpark. July is the undisputed highlight: the Tilburgse Kermis — the largest funfair in the Benelux, with over 440 years of history — transforms the city centre for ten days and draws more than a million visitors. Music lovers should target April for the internationally acclaimed Roadburn Festival, a gathering of heavy, experimental, and underground music. Autumn brings cultural programming and fewer crowds, while winters are quiet but manageable. Summer is peak season, so book accommodation early if visiting in July.
