01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Intag Valley.

Ecuador's cloud forest frontier — pristine biodiversity, community ecotourism, and a landscape that has resisted industrial mining.

Intag Valley is a remote, biodiverse region in Imbabura Province, Ecuador, spanning altitudes from 600 to 3,500 m within the Chocó biodiversity hotspot. Home to over 400 bird species, spectacled bears, jaguars, and rare harlequin frogs, it is one of the most ecologically rich corners of South America. Community-run ecotourism — from cloud forest reserves and natural hot springs to organic coffee farms — has become both the economic backbone and a shield against large-scale copper mining. It sits a few hours from Quito and Otavalo, making it an accessible off-the-beaten-path escape for nature lovers and sustainable travel advocates.
