01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Copan.

The 'Paris of the Maya World' — explore Central America's most ornately carved ancient ruins in a charming cobblestone town.

Copán Ruinas is a small, walkable town in western Honduras, just 1 km from the UNESCO World Heritage Maya archaeological site of Copán — famous for its intricate stone stelae, grand Hieroglyphic Stairway, and wild scarlet macaws. Beyond the ruins, the town offers a relaxed, cobblestone-street atmosphere with excellent cafes, a bird sanctuary, hot springs, coffee tours, and ziplines. It sits near the Guatemalan border at ~600 m elevation, giving it a pleasantly tropical-mountain climate. Quieter and far less crowded than Tikal or Chichén Itzá, Copán rewards travelers who want an immersive, off-the-beaten-path Maya experience.
