Transylvania's beating heart — where Gothic spires, festival fever, and tech-startup energy collide.

Cluj-Napoca is Romania's unofficial capital of Transylvania and its second-largest city — an economic and academic powerhouse that blends medieval architecture with a youthful, cosmopolitan energy. Home to the country's largest university, it pulses with a thriving arts scene, world-class festivals like TIFF and Untold, and a fast-growing tech ecosystem that has made it one of Europe's most liveable cities. Affordable by Western standards, walkable in the centre, and surrounded by stunning Transylvanian countryside, Cluj rewards both short-break visitors and long-stay digital nomads equally.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
Cluj-Napoca is served by Avram Iancu International Airport (CLJ), located about 8 km east of the city centre. The most budget-friendly option from the airport is the Airport Express bus (Line A1E), which runs directly to Mihai Viteazul Square in roughly 25–35 minutes and costs 6 RON, purchased on board. Trolleybuses 5 and 8 also connect the airport to the centre for 3 RON per trip. Taxis from official ranks outside arrivals cost around 30–50 RON to the centre; always insist on the meter. Bolt and Uber are both widely available and offer transparent pre-trip pricing. By rail, Cluj has direct intercity train connections from Bucharest (roughly 8–9 hours) and Timișoara (4–5 hours), arriving at Gara Cluj-Napoca, which is a short ride or 20-minute walk from the Old Town.
CTP Cluj-Napoca operates a comprehensive public transit network of buses, trolleybuses, and trams covering most of the city. Single-trip tickets cost 3.50 RON (post-August 2025 fare update) and can be purchased from kiosks at major stops, via contactless bank card on board, or through the 24Pay and SMS Ticket mobile apps. Day passes are available for regular riders. Taxis are metered at roughly 2.5–3.5 RON/km; stick to recommended firms or use Bolt and Uber for cashless, price-transparent rides. The compact Old Town is very walkable, and Cetățuia Hill is easily reached on foot from the centre. Bike-sharing is available via the city scheme for leisure rides along the Someșul Mic riverside paths.
Spring (April–June) is the prime window: the Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden bursts with over 40,000 tulips, café terraces fill the Old Town squares, and the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) draws cinephiles in late May/early June. Early autumn (September–October) is equally rewarding — temperatures ease, the Jazz in the Park festival livens up Central Park, and the city is less crowded than during peak summer. Summer (July–August) brings the biggest festivals — Electric Castle and Untold both land in or near Cluj each year, pulling huge international crowds, so book accommodation months ahead. Winter is cold and grey but magical around December, when the Union Square Christmas Market transforms the Old Town into a festive wonderland.
