Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is the South Island's main international hub, located just 20 minutes from the city centre by car or bus. Air New Zealand operates non-stop domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Rotorua, and Dunedin. The most budget-friendly transfer into the city is Metro bus Route 29 (Airport → Bus Interchange via Fendalton), with buses running every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. The standard cash fare is NZ$4; with a MetroCard it drops to NZ$2, and contactless credit/debit card payment (including Apple Pay and Google Pay) is available on Route 29 as well. Route 3 serves Riccarton, the hospital, and Sumner; Route 8 heads to Lyttelton. Shuttle vans and taxis are available from Door 7/9 of International Arrivals for those with heavy luggage. By rail, the Coastal Pacific scenic train runs from Picton along the Kaikōura coastline to Christchurch, and the famous TranzAlpine connects Christchurch with Greymouth over the Southern Alps. Rental cars and campervans are widely available at the airport for onward South Island road trips.

Christchurch is a flat, compact city that is easy to navigate on foot, by bike, or by bus. The Metro bus network is the backbone of public transport, with buses radiating from the Bus Interchange on the corner of Colombo and Lichfield Streets. During peak hours, core routes run every 10–15 minutes. The standard cash fare is NZ$4 per trip; the reloadable MetroCard reduces this to NZ$2 and applies daily and weekly fare caps — worth buying if you stay more than a few days (NZ$10 card fee, NZ$10 minimum top-up). Free 2-hour transfers apply across all payment methods. Route 29 operates Christchurch's first fully electric bus service. Christchurch's well-developed cycling infrastructure and flat terrain make bikes a popular option; numerous cycle routes crisscross the city. Ride-share apps (Uber) also operate here. For day trips to Port Hills, Lyttelton, Akaroa, or ski fields, a rental car is recommended.

Christchurch sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are reversed from Europe and North America. Summer (December–February) is the undisputed peak: highs average around 22°C (72°F), daylight stretches past 9pm in December and January, and every outdoor activity — swimming at Sumner Beach, hiking the Port Hills, punting the Avon, and dolphin-watching near Akaroa — is at its best. This is also the busiest and most expensive window. Spring (September–November) is arguably the finest sweet spot: gardens erupt in magnolias, azaleas, and roses; temperatures are pleasantly mild at 15–17°C; crowds are thinner; and ski fields in the nearby Southern Alps are still open into October. Autumn (March–April) mirrors spring's calm and colour, with warm lingering days and noticeably fewer tourists — a great time for photography and wine touring on Banks Peninsula. Winter (June–August) is cool (lows near 2–4°C) but rarely brutal; it offers excellent skiing at nearby resorts like Mt Hutt, cheaper accommodation, and a more local atmosphere in the city's cafes and museums. Canterbury's weather is famously changeable — pack layers year-round, and note that New Zealand's UV levels are high even on overcast days.
