01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Allentown.

Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley hub where industrial heritage meets a lively arts and food scene.

Allentown is the largest city in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, sitting about 60 miles north of Philadelphia along the Lehigh River. Once a steel and manufacturing powerhouse, the city has reinvented itself with a revitalized downtown anchored by the PPL Center arena, the ArtsWalk corridor, and a growing restaurant scene. Affordable living costs, easy highway access, and proximity to the Pocono Mountains and Philadelphia make it an appealing base for remote workers and long-term visitors alike.

Getting in

How to arrive

The primary gateway is Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), located about 5 miles northeast of downtown Allentown, with nonstop service to major hubs including Philadelphia (PHL), Charlotte (CLT), and Orlando (MCO). Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), roughly 60 miles south via I-78, offers far broader international connections and is reachable in about 75 minutes by car or via Trans-Bridge Lines bus service. Newark Liberty (EWR) is approximately 75 miles northeast and is another viable option for transatlantic flights. By road, Allentown sits at the crossroads of I-78 and US-22. Greyhound and FlixBus serve the Allentown Transportation Center on North 7th Street with routes to New York City, Philadelphia, and beyond. Amtrak does not directly serve Allentown; the nearest active Amtrak station is in Philadelphia, though the Allentown Transportation Center connects to regional bus networks.

Getting around

Moving through the city

The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority (LANTA) operates the local bus network, covering most of Allentown and connecting to Bethlehem and Easton. A single LANTA fare is $1.50, with a day pass available for $4.00. The downtown core is walkable, especially along Hamilton Street and the ArtsWalk corridor. Rideshares (Uber and Lyft) are widely available. Cycling is feasible along the Lehigh Parkway multi-use trail, though dedicated bike infrastructure is limited on most streets. A car remains the most practical option for reaching suburban attractions like Dorney Park or Cedar Crest College-area restaurants.

When to go

Timing your trip

Allentown experiences a classic Mid-Atlantic four-season climate. May and June bring mild temperatures (60–75 °F), blooming parks, and the start of the IronPigs minor-league baseball season at Coca-Cola Park. Summer (July–August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s; Dorney Park is at its busiest and outdoor festivals fill Lehigh Parkway. September and October are arguably the finest months — foliage colors peak in mid-October, crowds thin, and the restaurant and arts scene is fully active without summer heat. Winters (December–February) are cold, with occasional snow, but hotel rates drop significantly and the PPL Center hosts hockey and concerts throughout the season. Spring shoulder months (March–April) can be wet and unpredictable but offer lower prices.
