01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Yerevan.

Yerevan — the ancient "Pink City" where Soviet grandeur meets a buzzing Caucasian café culture.

Yerevan is Armenia's capital and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with roots stretching back to 782 BC — older than Rome. Known as the "Pink City" for its distinctive rose-colored volcanic tuff buildings, it pairs wide tree-lined boulevards and landmark Soviet-era architecture with a thriving modern café, arts, and nightlife scene. About one-third of Armenia's entire population lives here, yet the city retains a relaxed pace and famously warm hospitality. Day-trip access to ancient monasteries, Roman temples, and snow-capped views of Mount Ararat make it a natural base for exploring the wider Caucasus.

Researched city guide

The practical read.

Getting in, getting around, and the honest tradeoffs — researched and cited, not generated from thin air.

What works

  • Extremely affordable cost of living by European and Middle Eastern standards
  • Exceptionally safe and welcoming city — easy to explore even late at night
  • Vibrant café culture, arts scene, and legendary techno nightlife
  • World-class day-trip access: Geghard, Garni Temple, Khor Virap, and Lake Sevan all within 2 hours
  • Rich, layered history spanning nearly 3,000 years
  • Growing tech and start-up ecosystem, with coworking spaces in the center

What to weigh

  • Air quality is a real concern — PM2.5 levels exceed WHO limits on the majority of days
  • Heavy traffic and chaotic road culture makes driving stressful and pedestrian crossings risky
  • Internet speeds, while improving, remain below modern nomad standards outside coworking spaces
  • Summer heat (July–August) can be oppressive
  • Limited public transport schedules outside the metro line
  • English proficiency is moderate — Armenian or Russian is a significant advantage
Getting in

How to arrive

Yerevan is served by Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), located just 12 km (7.5 miles) from Republic Square — about a 20-minute drive. Major carriers including Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Aeroflot connect Yerevan to Frankfurt, Vienna, Doha, and Moscow, while Wizz Air offers budget routes to Vienna, Athens, Milan, Paris, and Abu Dhabi with fares often starting around €100. The cheapest way into the city is Bus 201 (Airport Express), operated by EliteBus, which runs every 30 minutes from 07:00–21:30 and costs just 300 AMD (~$0.80 USD) per person, dropping passengers at Yeritasardakan metro station near the Opera House. Taxis to the center are also affordable and can be booked via the GG or Yandex Taxi apps. There are no trains from the airport to the city. Armenia's sole international rail route is an overnight train from Yerevan's Central Railway Station to Tbilisi, Georgia (approx. 10 hours).

Getting around

Moving through the city

Central Yerevan is compact and highly walkable — you can cross the city center in under an hour on foot, with most museums, cafés, and restaurants clustered in Kentron. The Yerevan Metro runs a single north-south line with 10 stations at just 150 AMD (~$0.40 USD) per ride, making it one of the world's cheapest metro systems. Buses and minibuses (marshrutky) are the most popular form of public transit but operate without fixed schedules. For on-demand travel, ride-hailing apps GG, Utaxi, and Yandex Taxi are widely used and inexpensive — a cross-city fare runs around 600 AMD (~$1.60 USD) outside rush hour. Avoid metered taxis without apps, as overcharging is common. Rental cars start from around $25/day and are the best option for exploring sites outside Yerevan.

When to go

Timing your trip

The sweet spot for visiting Yerevan is spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October). Temperatures are mild, rainfall is relatively low, and the air is clear enough for spectacular views of Mount Ararat from the city. May through October generally offers the best combination of dry days and pleasant warmth. Summer (July–August) brings intense heat that many visitors find oppressive, while winter can be cold and grey, though nearby Tsaghkadzor ski resort (50–60 km from Yerevan) makes a December–February visit worthwhile for skiers and snowboarders. Autumn is particularly vibrant, with harvest-season produce flooding the markets and a buzzing festival calendar.
