01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Port of Spain.

The birthplace of Carnival and steelpan — a vibrant Caribbean capital alive with culture, food, and rhythm.

Port of Spain is the cosmopolitan capital of Trinidad and Tobago, set on the northwest coast of Trinidad along the Gulf of Paria and framed by the lush Northern Range. It is the crucible of Caribbean culture — birthplace of Carnival and the steel pan — blending colonial-era architecture with modern skyscrapers, world-class street food, and a rich multicultural heritage. The dry season (January–April) offers the best weather and culminates in the world-famous pre-Lenten Carnival. Visitors should exercise situational awareness, especially after dark, and stick to established tourist areas.
