Norfolk, Virginia is a dynamic waterfront city at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, best known as home to Naval Station Norfolk—the world's largest naval base. Beyond its maritime roots, the city pulses with a thriving arts scene anchored by the acclaimed Chrysler Museum of Art, a vibrant NEON District blanketed in public murals, and eclectic neighborhoods like Ghent and the historic Freemason District. With 144 miles of shoreline, a walkable downtown, and year-round festivals, Norfolk punches well above its weight as a cultural and outdoor destination in the American South.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
The main gateway is Norfolk International Airport (ORF), located just 15 minutes from downtown. ORF serves hundreds of daily flights on American, Delta, Southwest, United, Allegiant, Breeze, Frontier, and JetBlue, and is currently undergoing a $1 billion 'Transform ORF' expansion adding new gates and an on-site Courtyard by Marriott hotel. HRT Route 15 bus connects the airport to Downtown Norfolk, where the Tide Light Rail provides onward access across the city. Uber and Lyft are also widely available at the arrivals level. By rail, Amtrak's Northeast Regional stops in downtown Norfolk with direct service to Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. By car, I-64 and I-264 provide easy interstate access; from downtown, most regional attractions are within a 15-minute drive.
Downtown Norfolk is highly walkable, and the free FRED (Free Rides Every Day) battery-operated vehicle shuttles visitors around the core. For wider coverage, the Tide Light Rail runs a 7.5-mile route with 11 stops through downtown and beyond—it's the only frequent (15-minute headway) transit line in the city. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) buses cover the broader metro area, though most routes run every 30–60 minutes. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) and taxis fill gaps efficiently, and most attractions are within a 15-minute drive of each other. Pedego electric bike rentals are available for waterfront exploration, and the 10.5-mile Elizabeth River Trail is ideal for cycling between neighborhoods and major sights.
Norfolk enjoys a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, and the best windows for a visit are mid-April through May and mid-September through October. Spring brings blooming gardens, mild temperatures in the 60s–70s°F, and a buzzing festival calendar—highlights include the Virginia Arts Festival in April and Harborfest in June. Fall is arguably even more rewarding: temperatures settle into the comfortable 60s–70s°F, humidity drops, and the city hosts the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival and the Town Point Virginia Fall Wine Festival. Summer (June–August) is the peak tourist season with the warmest weather ideal for beach days at Ocean View, but heat and humidity can be oppressive and accommodation prices rise. Winter is quiet and affordable—temperatures hover in the 40s–50s°F—with occasional light snow and festive events like Winterfest on the USS Wisconsin.
