Nestled at the southern tip of Texas along the Rio Grande, McAllen is a vibrant border city that pulses with Hispanic culture, exceptional shopping, and a surprisingly rich arts scene. Known as the "City of Palms," it draws Winter Texans, cross-border shoppers, and birdwatchers from around the world — the region hosts over 540 recorded bird species. With a cost of living roughly 16–21% below the national average and warm, near-snowless winters, McAllen offers an accessible and affordable South Texas base camp.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
McAllen Miller International Airport (MFE) is the primary gateway, offering direct daily flights from Dallas, Houston, and other major hubs via American, United, and regional carriers. The airport's single-terminal layout means you can go from check-in to your gate in under 10 minutes. Downtown McAllen is just a 10-minute drive from MFE. By bus, the McAllen Metro #4 route connects the airport directly to the Central Bus Station for just $1.50. Uber and Lyft are also available curbside. By road, McAllen sits on US Highway 83 — from San Antonio it is approximately a 3.5-hour drive (about 240 miles) south. Visitors crossing from Mexico can use the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge, located roughly 8 km (5 miles) south of downtown. Long-distance bus connections via Greyhound link McAllen to Houston (via Edinburg, Corpus Christi, and Victoria) and San Antonio (via Kingsville and Corpus Christi).
McAllen is largely a car-dependent city, and renting a vehicle is the most convenient way to explore. McAllen Metro operates local public transportation on 9 routes departing from the Central Bus Station; the #4 bus is the most useful for travelers, linking the airport to downtown. Rideshare apps Uber and Lyft operate throughout the city and are a practical option for airport transfers and evening outings. Taxis are available but less common; a list of local companies and rates can be found through the city's visitor resources. For those driving, US-83 (Expressway 83) is the main east-west artery connecting McAllen to Brownsville and Laredo.
McAllen's subtropical climate makes timing your visit important. The sweet spot runs from November through March, when daytime highs settle between 65°F and 82°F (18–28°C), rainfall is minimal (as little as 0.8 in/month in February), and the skies are largely sunny. This is also peak 'Winter Texan' season, when seasonal residents flood the Valley and cultural events are at their liveliest. Spring (March–April) brings beautiful wildflowers and cultural festivals, with temperatures climbing pleasantly toward the 80s–90s°F. Summer (June–August) is intense — peak daytime temperatures regularly hit 99–101°F (37–38°C) with high humidity; plan any outdoor activity for early morning or after sunset. September is the wettest month, averaging over 5 inches of rain. McAllen virtually never sees snow, making it a year-round escape from northern winters.
