Where two nations meet — Laredo blends deep South Texas heritage with vibrant border culture on the Rio Grande.
Where two nations meet — Laredo blends deep South Texas heritage with vibrant border culture on the Rio Grande.

Laredo is a spirited border city on the banks of the Rio Grande, where American, Texan, and Mexican cultures fuse into something wholly unique. With a history older than the United States itself, it offers colonial plazas, UNESCO-recognized birding hotspots, golf courses overlooking Mexico, and some of the most authentic Tex-Mex experiences in the country. The city serves as a major international trade gateway, giving it a cosmopolitan energy that belies its South Texas setting. Visitors come for cultural festivals, shopping, outdoor recreation at Lake Casa Blanca, and the thrill of standing at the edge of two countries.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
Laredo is served by Laredo International Airport (LRD), located just minutes from downtown. The airport offers daily nonstop flights to Dallas/Fort Worth (American Airlines) and Houston (United Airlines), plus weekly service to Las Vegas and seasonal routes to Los Angeles and Orlando. From the airport, taxis queue at the baggage claim exit, Uber is available via the app, and the Laredo Transit (El Metro) bus stops outside baggage claim for a budget-friendly ride into the city. By road, I-35 connects Laredo to San Antonio approximately 150 miles north. US 59 runs east toward Corpus Christi, and US 83 follows the Rio Grande south toward the Gulf Coast.
A car is the most practical way to explore Laredo, given the city's spread-out layout. Rental desks are available at Laredo International Airport (LRD). For public transit, El Metro operates 24 bus routes in a hub-and-spoke network, all terminating at a downtown transit center, with most routes running seven days a week and annual ridership of over 4.3 million. Three downtown trolley routes also serve the historic core. Uber is available city-wide around the clock. The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo (Western Division) and core sights like the Imaginarium and Laredo Little Theatre are reachable on foot from downtown hotels.
The best window to visit Laredo is November through March, when pleasant temperatures between 68°F and 82°F make outdoor exploration a delight. Winters are mild and mostly sunny — snowfall is essentially unheard of — though December and January can turn briefly cool at night (lows to the mid-40s°F). March and November are especially sweet spots: warm enough for the Rio Grande trail and Lake Casa Blanca, with lower hotel rates than peak summer. Avoid June through August if you dislike extreme heat; daytime highs routinely top 100°F in July and August, and humidity adds to the discomfort. September is the wettest month, with the occasional remnant of Gulf or Pacific hurricanes bringing heavy downpours. The annual Laredo Birding Festival each February draws enthusiasts chasing rare green parakeets and kingfishers, while the Washington's Birthday Celebration — one of the largest in the nation — fills the city with festivities every February.
