Most visitors instead fly into Helsinki and continue overland: direct coaches run from Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Lahti, Oulu, Kuopio and several other Finnish cities, with a Helsinki-Jyväskylä bus ticket usually costing about €10-50 and taking roughly 3.5 hours. Trains also connect Helsinki and Jyväskylä (via Tikkurila), and VR trains link Kuopio to Jyväskylä twice daily in about 1h45m. The combined bus and train station, Jyväskylän matkakeskus, is the arrival hub for both long-distance coaches and trains.

Local transport runs on the green Linkki bus network, which covers Jyväskylä and nearby municipalities like Muurame and Laukaa. The system has three fare zones (A-C); a single cash ticket from the driver costs €4 for one zone (rising with more zones), while contactless card or the Waltti mobile app brings the fare down to about €2.70 per ride, with transfers free within 60-120 minutes depending on zones. Day tickets covering all zones cost around €11 for 24 hours. The warm season runs from late May to early September, and the best weather for sightseeing, hiking, and lake activities falls between late June and mid-August, peaking around the third week of July. Late July into August also brings the Secto Rally Finland and the Jyväskylä Festival, while winter (December-February) draws visitors for snow, cross-country skiing, and sauna culture, despite temperatures regularly dropping below freezing.
