Florida's largest city serves up 22 miles of beaches, storied neighborhoods, and a genuine Southern soul.

Jacksonville anchors Florida's northeast Atlantic coast as the state's most populous city, yet retains a refreshingly unhurried, small-town character. Spanning 840 square miles of waterways, barrier islands, and historic districts, it offers world-class museums, a buzzing craft-beer scene, top-tier golf, and surf-ready beaches without the theme-park crowds found further south. A $2 billion downtown revitalization is reshaping the urban core, making now an ideal time to visit before prices catch up with the experience.

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is the main gateway, located about 14 miles north of downtown and served by all major U.S. carriers including American, Delta, Southwest, United, JetBlue, and budget airlines. The airport offers taxis, rideshare (Uber/Lyft), dedicated JTA bus routes, and 24-hour shuttle services to downtown. Amtrak also provides daily intercity rail service from Jacksonville's station on Clifford Lane. Greyhound operates a bus terminal in downtown near the Skyway Central Station. From Orlando, Jacksonville is roughly 140 miles northeast — about a 2–2.5 hour drive via I-95 N and I-4 E.
A car is effectively essential for exploring Jacksonville — at 840 square miles, it is the largest city by area in the contiguous U.S., and Jacksonville Beach is about 17 miles from downtown. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) operates fixed-route buses on 37 routes at a flat $1 fare, with express routes for $1.50. The First Coast Flyer BRT network spans nearly 50 miles in all directions. The JTA Skyway is a free 2.5-mile automated downtown monorail with 8 stops connecting the Northbank CBD, Convention Center, and Southbank. Downtown trolley-replica buses on Bay Street and Beaver Street routes are also free on weekdays. The My JTA app provides real-time arrivals, fare payment, and alerts. JTA's NAVI autonomous shuttle service operates in the downtown Bay Street Innovation Corridor. The St. Johns River Ferry connects Mayport Village and Fort George Island. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is widely available citywide.
Spring (March–May) is widely considered Jacksonville's prime season. Highs climb from the mid-70s in March to the low 80s by May, humidity is manageable, skies are at their clearest, and the cultural calendar peaks: The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass arrives in late March, followed by the Jacksonville Jazz Festival — one of the largest free jazz events in the country — in May. Fall (October–November) is a superb secondary window: summer heat breaks, highs settle to a comfortable 82°F in October, accommodation prices dip, and the beaches thin out. Summer (June–August) is peak beach season with long sunny days, but expect highs in the low 90s, oppressive humidity, and daily afternoon thunderstorms — plan outdoor sightseeing for mornings. Winter is Jacksonville's low season; highs drop to the mid-60s with overnight lows in the 40s, which rules out beach swimming but unlocks very cheap hotel rates and uncrowded museums. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the most active storm threat in September and October.
