The Furniture Capital of the World, with a creative downtown revival and Piedmont Triad charm.

High Point, North Carolina earned its name as the highest point on the historic railroad line between Goldsboro and Charlotte, and today it's synonymous with its semiannual High Point Market — the largest wholesale furniture trade show in the world. Beyond the showrooms, the city offers a growing arts scene anchored by Congdon Yards, family-friendly attractions like the award-winning Nido & Mariana Qubein Children's Museum, and outdoor recreation at the 1,500-acre Oak Hollow Lake. It's a compact, affordable Piedmont Triad city best explored as a base for day-tripping into nearby Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
The closest commercial airport is Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, roughly 15–20 minutes from downtown High Point by car or rideshare. Amtrak serves High Point directly on the Carolinian/Piedmont line running between Charlotte and Raleigh: trains run 5 times daily from Charlotte Amtrak Station, with tickets costing $17–$40 and a journey time of about 1 hour 14 minutes. From Raleigh, the trip takes under two hours. Bus travelers can connect via FlixBus to Greensboro Depot, then transfer to local bus route 9 to High Point Terminal (total journey approx. 3 hours 11 minutes from Charlotte). Driving remains the fastest and most flexible option for most visitors.
High Point is primarily a car-dependent city. The downtown Uptowne core is walkable, but most attractions — Oak Hollow Lake, Kersey Valley, and the furniture showrooms — are spread across the suburbs and require a vehicle or rideshare. High Point Transit System (HPTS) runs local bus routes, but schedules are limited and walking between bus stops can be challenging without sidewalk coverage on all routes. Uber and Lyft are available. If arriving by Amtrak, consider renting a car at the station or using rideshare for day trips around the Triad.
Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the sweet spots for visiting High Point, offering mild temperatures, low humidity, and the city's most vibrant energy. That said, be mindful of High Point Market weeks — held each April and October — when the city's population of ~112,000 nearly doubles with trade visitors, hotel prices surge, and restaurants fill up fast. Unless you're attending the Market, aim for the shoulder periods around those weeks. Summer brings warm to hot weather with high humidity; July averages 78–89°F. Winter is mild by national standards but fairly quiet, with the best hotel deals of the year.
