01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Guanajuato.

Mexico's most colorful UNESCO gem — colonial grandeur, underground tunnels, and a pulsing university soul.

Guanajuato is a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city tucked into a deep ravine in central Mexico, its hillsides blanketed in fuchsia, yellow, and turquoise buildings. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, it grew into the world's leading silver-mining center and today enchants visitors with labyrinthine cobblestone alleys, baroque churches, and a famously romantic kiss-worthy alleyway. A large university population keeps the city lively with cafes, street performers, and festivals — most notably the world-class Festival Internacional Cervantino each October. Compact and walkable above ground, it is also threaded by a unique network of underground tunnels that once carried floodwaters and now carry traffic.
