01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Dubuque.

Where the Mississippi meets three states — Dubuque blends bluff-top history with riverfront revival.

Perched at the tri-state corner of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, Dubuque is a compact river city punching well above its weight. Its revitalized Port of Dubuque offers world-class museum experiences and a lively casino scene, while Victorian hilltop neighborhoods and century-old architecture recall the city's status as Iowa's oldest settlement. Outdoor lovers find wooded bluffs, Mississippi paddlewheel cruises, and nearby state parks, all wrapped in genuine Midwestern affordability.

Researched city guide

The practical read.

Getting in, getting around, and the honest tradeoffs — researched and cited, not generated from thin air.

What works

  • Cost of living roughly 9% below the national average — housing especially affordable
  • Stunning Mississippi River scenery with bluffs, trails, and waterfront dining
  • Rich history as Iowa's oldest city, with walkable Victorian architecture
  • Excellent family anchor: National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is world-class
  • Easy tri-state day-trip access (Chicago, Madison, Galena all within ~2–3 hours)
  • Clean air and low population density mean uncrowded attractions year-round

What to weigh

  • Commercial air service at DBQ is currently suspended — flying in requires a 1–1.5 hour drive from Cedar Rapids or Chicago
  • A car is essentially required; public transit coverage is limited outside downtown
  • Harsh winters (December–February) with sub-freezing temperatures and heavy snow
  • Limited nightlife and dining diversity compared to larger Midwestern cities
  • Smaller job market and remote-work infrastructure than major metros
Getting in

How to arrive

Dubuque Regional Airport (DBQ) sits about 9 miles south of downtown — a roughly 20-minute drive. As of early 2026, scheduled commercial jet service at DBQ has been suspended; most travelers fly into Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids (~68 miles away) or Chicago O'Hare (ORD, ~166 miles). Anaman Concierge Service runs a curb-to-curb shuttle between DBQ's terminal and CID, with departures from Dubuque starting at 2 a.m. and running every few hours through 5 p.m. daily; fares start at $40 (business hours) or $50 (after hours). Rental cars (Avis/Budget, Enterprise) are available at the DBQ terminal. By intercity bus, Burlington Trailways serves the Intermodal Transportation Center at 950 Elm St, with tickets from around $30. Megabus also offers daily service to/from Madison, Wisconsin. Dubuque is accessible by car via US Highways 20, 52, 61, and 151.

Getting around

Moving through the city

A car is strongly recommended for reaching parks and attractions on Dubuque's outskirts. Within the city, The Jule is Dubuque's public transit system, operating fixed routes throughout the metro. A free Downtown Business Shuttle connects Port of Dubuque parking with downtown employers on 20-minute loops on weekdays from 6:45–9 a.m. and 4–6:35 p.m. Jule Smart Passes (reloadable) can be purchased at the Intermodal Center (950 Elm St) or via phone app. Uber and Lyft both operate in Dubuque, as do several local taxi companies (A1 Taxi, #1 Green Cab, Bell Taxi). Bikes can be brought aboard Jule buses for free with a regular fare.

When to go

Timing your trip

Dubuque's climate swings dramatically across four seasons, so timing matters. The sweet spot is late spring through early fall. May and September stand out as arguably the most balanced months — comfortable temperatures in the mid-60s°F, manageable humidity, and far less rain than the peak summer. June kicks off long sunny days (up to 10 hours of sunshine daily) and is ideal for riverfront walks and outdoor excursions. July is the hottest month, with highs averaging around 84°F, but it's also peak festival season on the Mississippi. August is the sunniest month overall but also the wettest, so pack a rain layer. Fall (September–October) brings spectacular foliage on the bluffs, cooling temperatures, and a packed calendar of local festivals — October's peak colors make scenic drives to Maquoketa Caves or the Field of Dreams especially rewarding. Winter (December–February) is cold, snowy, and quiet; January lows can dip below 10°F, limiting most outdoor activities.
