01 · The lay of the land

A field guide to Costa da Caparica.

Portugal's longest stretch of golden beaches just 30 minutes from Lisbon, beloved by surfers and locals alike.

Costa da Caparica is a stunning 26km coastline of glorious sandy beaches south of Lisbon that stretches across the Setúbal Peninsula. Enclosed by ochre cliffs dating back to the Jurassic Period, pristine sand dunes and wooded hills, this broad golden shoreline extends 22 kilometres down the coast. Known for its endless golden sands, relaxed atmosphere, and authentic Portuguese charm, this vibrant beach town is beloved by surfers chasing Atlantic swells and travelers in search of local flavor. The town itself is a friendly affair with all the usual tourist facilities, traditionally a fishing village where women still peddle the fresh catch at the side of the street, now serving mainly as the nearest summer resort for Lisboans.
