The quick answers travelers want before they commit to flights, neighborhoods, and how long to stay.
The primary gateway for most visitors is George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), approximately 30 minutes south of Conroe via I-45. IAH served over 48 million passengers in 2025 and is a United Airlines hub offering 118 domestic and 69 international routes. Conroe/North Houston Regional Airport (CXO) sits just 6 km from the city center and handles private and corporate aircraft with customs facilities. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is a secondary option, roughly 50 minutes away. By car, Conroe is 40 miles north of Houston on I-45. Greyhound and other intercity bus services also stop in Conroe, with connections to Houston and beyond available through CheckMyBus.
Conroe is primarily a car-dependent city and a personal vehicle is the most practical way to get around. The city operates Conroe Connection Transit (CCT), a public fixed-route bus service running Monday–Friday, 7:00 am–7:00 pm, with routes covering downtown, the Dugan area, TX-105 west toward Tri-County Behavioral Health Services, and northeast toward Lone Star College. Reduced fares are available for students, seniors, and people with disabilities, and ADA paratransit service is also offered. Conroe also partners with METRO and H-GAC to run a weekday commuter Park & Ride service into Houston, a popular option for those working in the city. Rideshares (Uber/Lyft) are available throughout the area.
Conroe's climate is humid subtropical — summers are hot and oppressive, with August highs averaging around 95–97°F (35–36°C), while winters are short and mild. The most pleasant windows for a visit are mid-February through April and again in October–November, when temperatures hover comfortably in the upper 60s to mid-80s°F. Spring sees the highest tourism activity and is ideal for lake sports, wildflower walks, and birdwatching as migrating species pass through. Fall delivers similar weather with the added bonus of warm lake water still suitable for late-season swimming, plus amber-and-gold foliage along the shoreline. Summer draws the largest crowds to Lake Conroe for boating and water parks but comes with intense humidity and heat. May is the wettest month, averaging around 4 inches of rain. Winter is the slowest season — lodging prices dip, and the forest trails are quiet and peaceful, though temperatures can feel cold for those used to warmer climates.
