Earth's most extreme address: a research outpost at the bottom of the world, 90° South.
Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is a U.S. National Science Foundation research facility sitting atop the Antarctic ice sheet at 2,835 m (9,301 ft) elevation — the most remote scientific outpost on Earth. Operated year-round by the United States Antarctic Program, it hosts up to 150 personnel in summer and around 50 winter-over crew. Access is strictly limited to researchers, support staff, and a small number of ultra-premium expedition tourists, with flights possible only between late October and mid-February. The station drives global breakthroughs in astrophysics, climate science, and glaciology, home to landmarks like the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the iconic Geographic South Pole marker.
